"
Beginner Goalie Defense"
…A.
Against an opposing forward's 3 Rod shots
Keep a moving defense going. Using the middle man on the goalie's
3-rod and rotating using both men on the Goalie's 2-rod, try to cover 2 of
the 3 main holes at all times. (long, Short, or Middle) Keep your men
spread out about 1.5 ball lengths to cover as much of the Goal as
possible. Don't be too jumpy, remain calm and cool, and don't get mad and
all up tight after you get scored on. Getting all up tight and self
destruction will cause your muscles to tense up and you will play even
worse. Remember the opposing forward has the ball, knows when he is going
to start his shot and where his is shooting it at. Sometimes you can leave
a hole open and to dictate where the forward is to shoot, but you must
quickly get back to that open hole, before they execute the shot in order
to block it. Do not use a *Dead Duck Sitting Still* Defense. You need to
use a Smooth moving (not too jumpy) defense blocking against the opposing
forward's shooting rod.
…B. In Singles: Against an opposing goalie's 2-rod Set Pull Shot
Place the 1st man (closest to the near wall) on the goalie 2-bar
tilted forward at the 2nd dot from the near wall. Place the middle man on
the goalie 3-bar tilted forward at the 4.5 dot from the near wall. Put
your left hand on the 5-bar and your right hand on the 3-bar. In this
defense you must block all other holes with your five and three men rods.
Keep the 1st man of your Forward's 3-rod on the ball (maybe leading a
little bit now and then) and rotate the men on your 5-bar back and forth
trying to make it look like all the other holes are covered.
...C. In Doubles: Against an opposing goalie's 2-rod Set Pull
Shot
Opponent is shooting from the Goalie Pull Shot Position. Place the 1st
man (closest to the near wall) on the goalie 2-bar tilted back at the 1.5
dot from the near wall. Place the middle man on the goalie 3-bar tilted
forward at the 3.5 dot from the near wall. This is the standard Goalie
Wars Zone Defense. In this Zone defense your forward must block all other
holes with the five and the three man rods. After the ball is shot towards
you, do not jump. Your forward is counting on you staying still, and
concentrating on blocking the other holes. Stay still and try to remain
sort of loose in case the ball hits into your men, then catch the ball. Stay
set in this position until the forward give you further instructions.
… When the opposing Goalie moves over to the Push side, simply slide
both of the men (on both rods that you are using to block with) over to
the other side of the table. When doing this try keeping the same distance
between your defensive men along the way and when you get to the far side
of the table, position them at the same corresponding Dots on the far side
of the table in an reverse defense.
...D. Against the Five Bar passing Series. The Passer is more
likely to pass either down the wall or the first lane on the near side of
the table to them. Use your left hand on the five and keep your right hand
on your three bar, just as if you had control of the ball. If you take the
ball away you will already be in your normal passing position. Move the
five rod at different speeds back and forth closing the hole you think the
passer is going for. Some times push the rod all the way to the wall and
hold it on the wall for a second or two, then sometimes hold it in the
lane for a second or two, then sometimes move it fast back and forth
between the wall and the lane. Try to force the passer to shoot a hole and
then jump over there and block the pass. At least this theory lets you
know in advance maybe where they are going and gives you a chance at
blocking the pass. It is difficult to block and take away a pass, but it
is highly possible, happens a lot, and can sometimes change the momentum
and outcome of a game.
